So Jo hasn’t returned to the kitchen… this is no Stepford wife!  The postwar woman can cook or not, have a job or not, wear a dress or not.  What she has won is not the right to do one specific thing or another… but to make all decisions for herself.  Before the war her choices were dictated by others… during the war, by her emotional need to oppose other people’s wishes.  Now, finally, Jo’s choices are her own.
